Erickson And West Dominate For Big Madera Speedway Wins

Matt Erickson extended his Open Late Model points lead (Photo Courtesy Don Thompson)

MADERA, CALIFORNIA (August 27, 2016) - Domination was the theme for the two MAVTV-televised Late Model divisions in Saturday's show at LoanMart Madera Speedway. Both races were won by their points leaders. Matt Erickson put on a strong clinical performance lapping up to third for the Open Late Model victory while Dezel West won his second consecutive 51FIFTY Junior Late Model race.

Three-time winner Austin Herzog of Clovis set a new track record in Jr. LM qualifying with a 15.194 second lap but had to start fourth after the redraw. Redwood Valley's Kolby Berry led the first five laps from the pole position with Las Vegas' West, 12, on his rear bumper. West looked inside several times but Berry was able to roll the top effectively to maintain the lead.

After a big of door banging, West took over to lead lap six. Las Vegas' Kyle Keller had a pair of spins to bring out cautions on lap nine and 12. Herzog worked his way past April winner Austin Edwards on the outside for the third spot. Herzog then challenged Berry in a very entertaining battle where he tried the outside on several occasions and also looked low.

A restart on lap 16 was the exclamation point of the race. Edwards and Canadian Ben Silliker made hard contact on the front stretch with Silliker's front wheels off the ground. Berry and Herzog came together on the backstretch with Herzog climbing the wall before the pair to a stop. Edwards had to pit for repairs while Silliker continued on in second. Herzog and Barry were done for the night.

Jarrett Gilmer took over second from Silliker before the race's halfway mark on lap 25. The running order was virtually unchanged throughout a non-stop final 25 laps with West blitzing to a 3.056 second victory ahead of Gilmer, Silliker, Alison Gay, and Keller.

Erickson's strong win was not an obvious outcome after the first 50 laps of the LoanMart Open Late Models were completed. He started the 22 car, 100 lap feature in tenth position after the redraw from qualifying second. Polesitter and fast time qualifier Rick Thompson led the first four laps of the race while Modesto's Garland Tyler jumped up to second inside Glen Cook.

Tyler Herzog spun in turn two for a yellow flag on lap four. The restart proved pivotal as Thompson got a slight jump on Tyler and moved up the race track coming out of turn four. Tyler got into the back of Thompson heading into turn one, sending Thompson for a spin. Both drivers were sent to the rear.

The melee handed Cook the lead but it was short lived as David Ross took the top spot using the inside line. A multi-car crash slowed things on lap nine and Logan Zampa and Ryan Philpott worked past Cook on the following green flag.

By the 17th lap Erickson was looking inside Dillon Tucker for fifth position, but the two made contact in turn three causing Tucker to spin and sending Erickson to the rear for involvement. Ross slowed dramatically on the gas for the next restart and fell out with a blown engine, giving Zampa the lead position to be the fourth different leader in the show.

Zampa ran a great race up front while Philpott and Cook staged a side-by-side duel of former Altamont racers. Philpott finally broke through to make it a battle between Cook and Tyler for third. Erickson chipped away at the pack and was into the top ten by lap 29. He quickly made his way to fourth by lap 41.

A caution period for a multi-car incident in front of the leaders in turn four gave Erickson his shot, as he went to the outside of Philpott to charge from fourth into second place. Erickson proceeded to hound Zampa in a thrilling fight for the lead. Zampa held off a pair of big slidejob attempts from Erickson to lead into the halfway break.

The second half of the race did not take place until three hours later, when the track had cooled substantially and was under darkness. Zampa's lead quickly went away as he picked the outside for the restart and Erickson took over the lead with Philpott going into second as well. The top six cars pulled way with Cook falling back to seventh. Cook ended up drifting all the way to the rear of the field with unknown mechanical problems.

Heavy lapped traffic was the name of the game by lap 61 and for the remainder of the event with Matt Erickson continually increasing his lead on the pack. The lead increased to nearly ten seconds at one stage. Philpott ran solidly in second place while the fans were treated to a great race between Zampa and Tyler for third. The rookie the veteran ran side-by-side in and out of traffic for the entire remaining laps of the race.

An incident involving Tyler, Zampa, and the lapped car of Chris Lyon brought out a yellow checkered at the conclusion of lap 100. Erickson won over Philpott, Dos Palos' Ryan Hart, Madera Ranchos' Dillon Tucker for a career best fourth, and Jason Aguirre of Atwater in fifth.

Chuck Dozhier had a well-deserved win in the Super Hobby Stocks to tighten the points chase in Madera's stock car division. Thomas Suarez had a hard hit to bounce off the front stretch wall as the field rolled to the green for the 30 lapper with Dozhier taking the lead from third starting position. Points leader Joseph Reichmuth worked his way up to second but was unable to close the gap on Dozhier before a caution on lap 21 for Eloy Bazan spinning from third.

Reichmuth seized the opportunity running side-by-side with Dozhier for the next four laps with neither driver giving an inch. The battle ended when Reichmuth spun in turn three on lap 25. Dozhier cruised to victory over former Madera Modified driver Jesus Hernandez of Fresno with Reichmuth winning a photo finish over Suarez for third.

The youth drivers in the California Mini Cups put on another great race with Adam "The Bullet" Lemke of Hollister picking up the 20 lap win. Calvin Hegje started on the pole but Lemke led from third by the end of the first lap. Points leader Jackson Dukes ran his way forward up to third by the close of the feature but Lemke held off Hegje for a .805 second victory with Dukes having to settle for third after a slow restart near the finish. Joseph Holliday and Aaron Thomas were the balance of the top-five.

Erik Woods broke the Jillaun Holden grip on the Toyota Sedan division by taking the victory in the 25 lap main event. Holden led the first six laps before Woods took the lead on lap seven. Woods managed to keep the top position all the way to the end for a .269 second win. Tommy Wreckless Thomas Magray was third. Lucy Carmona entered the night second in the points but had a crash into the inside K Rail in the heat race that ended her night prematurely.

Clovis' Kevin Thompson continued his drive for a fourth track championship in MST by defeating Bert Stephens for his ninth main event win of the year. There were several restarts after minor spins but Thompson was able to keep Stephens at bay throughout the duration of the race. Dennis Brannon rounded out the top-three.

LoanMart Madera Speedway continues on September 3rd with Hampton Inn and Suites Night at the Speedway. Madera Late Models, Madera Hobby Stocks, NCPRO 4 Modifeds, MST's, Toyota Sedans, 4-Bangers, and the Jr, Late Model 25 lap exhibition race make up the racing card!

Hicks Keeps Love Affair With Orange Show Speedway Alive

San Bernardino (August 21, 2016) - Matthew Hicks knows how to keep a romance alive.

Last week, in the days leading up to the return of the Lucas Oil Modified Series presented by LoanMart to Orange Show Speedway, Hicks talked about how often he has raced there and the success he had had and said “I love Orange Show.”

That's not a sentiment shared by many because the small, tight quarter-mile oval has driven young men to frustration and old men to more drink than usual. But Saturday night Hicks demonstrated why he's so fond of the oft-maligned matron by winning there for the second year in a row.

The 29-year-old from Lakeside, California, started fourth in the 24-car field, took the lead during a caution period on lap 28 and stayed in front for 72 more laps to take the checkered flag for the LoanMart Super Fast 100 a comfortable 0.639 seconds ahead of Linny White in a repeat of last year's finish.

It was the third series win for Hicks but his first this season and it put him back on top of the Hoosier Tire West point standings with three races remaining in the 10-race championship season. He had gone into the race 1 point behind fifth-place finisher Scott Winters after spending three weeks in the lead.

Hicks was fifth in qualifying, where Kyle Tellstrom set fast time with a track record 13.537 seconds and there was only 26/100ths of a second separating the top 16, and started fourth after an 8-car invert.

Pole-sitter Wes Miller and front-row companion Ryan Partridge set the pace in the early going, with Hicks settling into the top five long with Winters and White and those behind getting into various forms of mischief.

The front-runners got in the mischievous mood on lap 27, when Miller and Partridge got together on the back straightaway. That moved Hicks from third to first with White and Dylan Cappello in pursuit and he never trailed after that.

“It was exactly the way I planned it,” Hicks said. “During that long run (under green conditions from laps 35 to 80) I knew there had to be more cautions and I just tried to cruise. Even when Linny started to close in on me I tried not to sweat it, just let him go, let him use his stuff up trying to get to me. “then with 15 laps to go I said 'all right, it's go time.' I found something that works and Linny got off my bumper and I statrted creeping away.”

White, who had moved into second on lap 51, gave Hicks a few love taps in an effort to take the lead late in the race, but had his quest spoiled by Hicks and conditions.

“Someone was putting gear old down,” White said while Patridge nodded in confirmation. “After the last restart (on lap 80) it was bad; it just killed everything I had. It was sliding the nose getting down in (a corner) and I had no grip off.”

Hicks, on the other hand, was firmly gripping the hand of his great love.

Evans Wins Fourth NWSLMS Race in Shootout

Airway Heights, WA (August 22, 2016)–Some wins might come easier than others and on Saturday night at Spokane’s Super Oval it was a no easy task for Garrett Evans. The two-time defending series champion, Evans, had to work his way to the front and win the battle with young gun Zack Beaman en route to his fourth Northwest Super Late Model Series victory of the season.

Beaman took second followed by Tayler Riddle third with Blake Williams and Mitch Kleyn rounding out the Top-5 running order.

Saturday evening started with Riddle blistering the track qualifying record with a lap of 17.736-sec. on the fast half-mile oval to pick up the Wheel Chill Fast Time and additional $100 cash bonus. Riddle held the previous record at 17.771 that he set back in 2015. Evans was also very fast in qualifying, locking up the second fastest lap. Riddle would draw a six-car invert and put Braeden Havens on the pole with Joey Bird outside the front row.

Havens brought the 22-car field to green grabbing the hole shot into turn 1 to take the lead over Bird. Early portions of the race saw the top-10 cars race nose to tail for the first 40 laps. Havens would hold his lead fighting off battles from second-place Shane Mitchell. Havens continued his lead until Lap 52 when Evans was able to get by Mitchell and put pressure on Havens. Evans was able to get the inside lane in turn three and take the lead. Beaman would follow Evans and move into the second position.

One of the biggest delays on the night came at lap 60 when 2015 Rookie of the Year Glenn Knutson lost a motor down the backstretch, going up into a ball of fire. The car would come to a rest in the top of turn 3 with the fire extinguished but not after leaving a large trail of oil on the track. The red flag would bunch the field up as they headed into the second half of the race.

Evans would bring the cars back around for the green flag on lap 62 with Beaman to the outside of him. The veteran Evans tried to pull Beaman on the start but the young driver kept side by side to the outside. Evans eventually got the lead down the backstretch. The top two were able to pull away from the rest of the field putting pressure and navigating lap traffic. Evans had a lead as big as 1.223 seconds over Beaman. As Evans closed in on lapped traffic he had trouble getting around one car opening the door for Beaman to close the gap.

Beaman used the lap traffic to his advantage and was able to drive around Evans on the outside for the lead. Beaman was able to pull out to a half-second lead until Evans was able to pass the lapped car. Evans worked his way back to the bumper of Beaman with just 10 laps to go.

Evans would regain the lead over Beaman on lap 116 and never look back to capture his fourth win on the year and continue his points lead in the chase for the 2016 championship race. The “KRC Power Steering Power Move of the Race” went to Beaman who showcased his talents against Evans, who gave him praise during post-race interviews.

The JOES Racing Hard Charger was Mitch Kleyn who advanced 6 positions from 11th to a top-5 finish. The two-time series championship runner up has now placed inside the top-5 running order in two of the last three races.

Next up for the NWSLMS is the Neal Newberry 125 at Wenatchee Valley Super Oval September 10th.

Madera Speedway Readying For Sixth Round Of LM & Jr. LM

Matt Erickson leads the field and the Open Late Model points (Photo Courtesy Jason Wedehase)

MADERA, CALIFORNIA (August 27, 2016) – One of the most competitive racing series in the country, the MAVTV-televised LoanMart Open Late Models and 51FIFTY Junior Late Models have been at a fever pitch. The sixth round of this eight race super series is this Saturday night at LoanMart Madera Speedway, with Super Hobby Stocks, Mini Cups, MSTs, and Toyota Sedans rounding out the racing card.

The Open Late Models have averaged 22 cars per race this year for their 100 lap contests and La Grange's Matt Erickson has fended off all challengers for a brilliant season. Erickson has won four of the five races to lead the points by a substantial 75 point margin. The point lead does not tell the full story as several drivers have given Erickson all he can handle. Most notably, Clovis's Bryan Herzog won the June 18th race and appeared on his way to win on July 25th before a clutch failure dropped him from the lead. Herzog finished second in the points in 2015 and is currently fourth in the 2016 order.

Tracy's Ryan Philpott has three second place finishes plus a pair of mechanical failures to rank second in the standings. The 2007 Altamont champion leads Modesto's Garland Tyler who is still in search of his first Open LM win. Herzog is fourth followed by three-time ASA TRUCK SERIES champion Joey Licata of Lake Balboa in fifth. Glen Cook, Ryan Hart, Shelden Cooper, Rick Thompson, and Jason Aguirre make up the top-ten. Thompson leads the local Late Model points at Madera and has turned his Open LM season around with finishes of tenth and fourth in the last two races.

Early season favorite David Ross of Colton is expected to make his Madera return on Saturday.

Las Vegas' Dezel West, 12, has wrestled the attention and the points lead away from 14 year-old Austin Herzog in the 51FIFTY Junior Late Models. The world's first full size stock car series for drivers ages 10-16 has produced arguably the best racing at the fastest one-third mile in the west.

Herzog appeared nearly untouchable after winning three of the first four races, but West was able to hold Herzog at bay for the duration of the July 50 lap feature. The duo is separated by just six points. Canadian Ben Silliker, age 11, has run in the top four in the last two races for third in the standings. 11 year-old Austin Edwards of Mentone won the April 30th race and added a third place finish in July for fourth overall. Jarrett Gilmer finished outside the top-six for the first time this year in the last race but maintains fifth in the standings.

Southern California standout Ryan Vargas missed the July event to drop to eighth in the points behind Kolby Berry and Alison Gay of Lakeside.

Joseph Reichmuth has finished in the top-two in all four Super Hobby Stock races to lead the points by ten points ahead of Chuck Dozhier. Reichmuth won an abbreviated feature in July. Dozhier himself has a win and has not finished worse than third. Thomas Suarez is 25 points out of the lead while Eloy Bazan is ranked fourth. Ivan Scorsur rounds out the top-five.

The California Mini Cups have been the success story of 2016 with a completely revamped lineup of drivers. The rookies have swept all three races with Clovis' Jackson Dukes getting the first two rounds and the points lead, while Stockton's JoJo Stearns won in July. Adam "The Bullet" Lemke of Hollister is a second year racer and is second in the points while also leading the Stockton track points.

Joshua "Bubba" Terry is the only other sophomore entrant and he is fourth in the standings with Lil Bruce Bivens overcoming an early season crash for fifth in the standings. Calvin Hegje finished third in his Madera debut in the last race.

The Modified Super Toyotas and Toyota Sedans have had a busy year at Madera. Kevin Thompson has won eight main events in the MSTs to enjoy a 42 point lead over three-time winner Bert Stephens. Zachary Cook, Rian Bowman, and Dennis Brannon round out the top-five in the championship.

The women of the Toyota Sedans are still holding court with Lucy Carmona's win on August 13th narrowing Jillaun Holden's points lead to 41 points. The pair have shared seven wins between them. Thomas Magray, popularly known as Tommy Wreckless, is third in the points followed by Mike Marley, and Erik Woods. Jason Lawton opened the year with two wins and two second place finishes notably in sixth in the points.
