LODI, CALIFORNIA (August 7, 2019) – Garcia Racing and Claremont’s Christian McGhee have teamed up to compete for the 2020 SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour championship. McGhee, age 21, returns to the series with 22 career starts including third-place in 2016 overall points and the 2016 Rookie of the Year. Mike and Larry Garcia will field the car with veteran crew chief Steve Teets on the wrenches.
“We ran a limited SRL schedule in 2005 and 2006 and we’ve been looking to do it again for a few years now,” Team Director Mike Garcia said. “We just needed the right timing, driver, and opportunity. The time is now!”
The team fielded McGhee twice in Modified races this year, including winning the first segment at Irwindale in July before ultimately finishing fifth overall.
McGhee has a total of four third-place finishes in the 2016 SRL tour and never finished outside the top seven. He has experience at most of the venues expected on the 2020 calendar. His resume also includes seven Late Model wins at Irwindale Speedway and a top-ten in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series, West. The team will kickstart their campaign by competing at Kern County’s October Classic on October 26th and Las Vegas on November 16th.
Garcia Racing has over 40 victories across the SPEARS Modifieds and Late Models including the 2011 Stockton 99 Speedway championship and the 2014 SPEARS Modified Series title. The 2019 season for Garcia Racing started off strong by winning the first two races of the year with Trevor Cristiani driving.
In addition to the full-time effort in the SRL, Garcia Racing will continue to field numerous cars in the SPEARS Modified Series.
The two tours are expected to share many of the same weekends again in 2020 under the second year of management by Larry Collins. The standalone weekends will not feature any conflicting dates.
