The Spears SRL Southwest Tour Series Visits Tucson Speedway



NOTES of INTEREST:

FIRST TIME EVER: This Saturday night will mark the first time in series history that the SPEARS Southwest Tour Series will compete on the Tucson Speedway 3/8-mile oval.

TWO AUTOGRAPH SESSIONS: Fans with get two chances to meet the drivers of the SPEARS Southwest Tour Series, once on Friday at 6:45pm at the Tech Shack, and Saturday at 6:15pm at the on track Meet ‘n Greet.

CHAMPIONSHIP TOP TEN: Current top ten in the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour Series championship standings: Derek Thorn-Bakersfield, CA 1040 points, Ryan Cansdale-Laguna Beach, CA 969, Christian McGhee-Claremont, CA 956, Jacob Gomes-Manteca, CA 902, Bobby Hodges-Carson City, NV 872, Carlos Vieira-Livingston, CA 852, Blaine Rocha-Oakdale, CA 814, Keith Spangler-Porter Ranch, CA 801, Brandon White-Eureka, CA 654, Parker Stephens-Olympia, WA 630.

Points system: Winner 180 points, 2nd 170, 3rd 165, 4th 160, 5th 155, 6th 150, 7th 146, 8th 142, 9th 138, 10th 134, 11th 130, 12th on down 3 points less per position.

SEVENTIETH START: Defending SPEARS Southwest Tour Series champion, Jacob Gomes of Manteca, will be making his 70th series start this weekend. At age 23, Gomes is tied with Scott Sanchez for 4th on the all-time starts list.

TIRES: The abrasive track surface at Tucson Speedway may show its ugly head late in the “Roasted Rattler 125”, as tire wear and tire preservation may heavily affect the outcome of Saturday night’s 125-lap SPEARS Southwest Tour Series race. Look for a lot of three-wide racing this weekend.

HUDDLESTON WIN: In his quest for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national title, Trevor Huddleston traveled to Tucson Speedway
on September 3rd to gain NASCAR national championship points and drove away with the victory.

TUCSON KNOW-HOW: In addition to Huddleston, Bobby Hodges, Dan Holtz, Bobby Lyon, Mike Mendenhall, Craig Raudman, Blaine Rocha, and Keith Spangler are the only SPEARS Southwest Tour Series drivers entered this weekend with any Tucson Speedway experience. Keith Spangler has the most Tucson Speedway starts of any active SPEARS Southwest Tour Series driver with eleven.

TRAVELIN’ MAN: After traveling only a few blocks from his home to Redwood Acres Raceway in Eureka, CA. for the previous SPEARS Southwest Tour Series race on August 5th. Brandon White, who resides in Eureka, will travel more than 1,200 miles one way for this weekend’s “Roasted Rattler 125” at Tucson Speedway.

CHAMPIONSHIP UNCERTAINTY: With just 168 points separating the current top five in the point standings, and a maximum of180 points available at each race, the 2016 SPEARS Southwest Tour Series championship is far from decided with three races remaining.

RACE 411: This Saturday night, September 17th, at Tucson Speedway, the SPEARS Southwest Tour Series “Roasted Rattler 125”. Spectator gates open at 5pm, SPEARS Southwest Tour Series qualifying at 5:15pm, On-track Fan Meet and Greet, 6:15pm, Racing at 7pm, Adult tickets $12, Junior tickets ages 11-16 $7.
